The Lifecycle of Software Objects by Ted Chiang

Lifecycle of Software Objects ABC Art.jpg

What’s the best way to create artificial intelligence? In 1950, Alan Turing wrote, “Many people think that a very abstract activity, like the playing of chess, would be best. It can also be maintained that it is best to provide the machine with the best sense organs that money can buy, and then teach it to understand and speak English. This process could follow the normal teaching of a child. Things would be pointed out and named, etc. Again I do not know what the right answer is, but I think both approaches should be tried.”

The first approach has been tried many times in both science fiction and reality. In this new novella, at over 30,000 words, his longest work to date, Ted Chiang offers a detailed imagining of how the second approach might work within the contemporary landscape of startup companies, massively-multiplayer online gaming, and open-source software. It’s a story of two people and the artificial intelligences they helped create, following them for more than a decade as they deal with the upgrades and obsolescence that are inevitable in the world of software. At the same time, it’s an examination of the difference between processing power and intelligence, and of what it means to have a real relationship with an artificial entity.

Conflicts edited by Ian Whates

– A spaceship hurtles into the unknown carrying humanity’s last hope, but does it also carry the seeds of its own doom? –

– The galaxy’s ultimate facilitator finds himself pursued by relentless enemies, while, of greater importance, there’s a puzzle to be solved –

– A rescue mission to a hostile alien world turns out to be far more than it seems –

– The Celtic nation has reclaimed its homeland, forcing the English into impoverished enclaves, but hot-headed English youth isn’t about to take that lying down –

– A trivial disagreement between two off-duty super soldiers out for some R&R escalates and escalates, eventually endangering an entire world –

Thirteen tales of human striving, of ingenuity, brilliance, desperate action, violence, and resolution. Thirteen tales of Conflict, of Science Fiction at its absolute best.

GODLIKE MACHINES

Godlike Machines edited by Jonathan Strahan

• Alastair Reynolds unlocks the secrets inside an alien spaceship—secrets that could change the world…if only a repressive regime would believe its last surviving explorer.

• Stephen Baxter sends wormhole builders to Titan, but what they discover there may fuel their wildest dreams...or destroy them.

• Cory Doctorow turns the idea of godlike machines on its head with replicating machines that turn cities back into wilderness.

• Sean Williams leads a spacer agent through a subterranean Structure...and into space-time itself.

• Robert Reed—in a story about the ancient, Jupiter-sized Great Ship—looks at a strange passenger who has been onboard far longer than seems possible.

• Greg Egan gives us an alien technology only he could imagine—a wandering world that’s inexplicably warm enough to support life.

Paul Di Filippo, "Yes, We Have No Bananas," Eclipse No. 3, edited by Jonathan Strahan, Night Shade Books

Alastair Reynolds, "The Fixation," The Solaris Book of New Science Fiction, Volume 3, edited by George Mann, Solaris

Bruce Sterling, "Black Swan," Interzone (April 2009)

Sarah Zettel, "The Persistence of Souls," The Shadow Conspiracy, edited by Phyllis Irene Radford & Laura Anne Gilman, Book View Café

Engineering Infinity edited by Jonathan Strahan

Engineering Infinity

by

Jonathan Strahan

The universe shifts and changes: suddenly you understand, you get it, and are filled with a sense of wonder. That moment of understanding drives the greatest science-fiction stories and lies at the heart of Engineering Infinity. Whether it's coming up hard against the speed of light and, with it, the enormity of the universe, realising that terraforming a distant world is harder and more dangerous than you'd ever thought, or simply realizing that a hitchhiker on a starship consumes fuel and oxygen with tragic results, it's hard science-fiction where sense of wonder is most often found and where science-fiction's true heart lies. The exciting and innovation science-fiction anthology collects together stories by some of the biggest names in the field including Stephen Baxter, Charles Stross and Greg Bear.
